Review: Wicked Lovely

Melissa Marr's Wicked Lovely is the first faerie novel that I've read. It was four years ago but I could still remember the story like it was just yesterday. It's the type of book that will stay with you and make you smile when you remember it. I know! It sounds so corny coming from me. Geez!

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Author: Melissa Marr

Rule #3: Don't stare at invisible faeries.
Aislinn has always seen faeries. Powerful and dangerous, they walk hidden in mortal world. Aislinn fears their cruelty—especially if they learn of her Sight—and wishes she were as blind to their presence as other teens.

Rule #2: Don't speak to invisible faeries.
Now faeries are stalking her. One of them, Keenan, who is equal parts terrifying and alluring, is trying to talk to her, asking questions Aislinn is afraid to answer.

Rule #1: Don't ever attract their attention.
But it's too late. Keenan is the Summer King who has sought his queen for nine centuries. Without her, summer itself will perish. He is determined that Aislinn will become the Summer Queen at any cost—regardless of her plans or desires.

Suddenly none of the rules that have kept Aislinn safe are working anymore, and everything is on the line: her freedom; her best friend, Seth; her life; everything.

BOOK REVIEW:

I must admit that not many people shared my admiration with Wicked Lovely. In fact, some even hated it! Wait... what?! Who hated it? Who?! Let me get my torch and fork. *breathes deeply* Okay, I've calmed down. Kidding aside, reading is a personal experience so I completely understand our differing opinions.

The novel began with Aislinn trying her best to avoid faeries. All her life, she lived by the rules of her grandmother. I remember comparing faeries to ghosts back then: once they knew you could see them, they would never leave you alone. Scary, I know. Unfortunately for her, she captured the attention of a faerie prince. I know what you're thinking: Mortal Girl + Faerie Prince = Love and Happy Ending. Wrong! There is more to the story than that.

This faerie prince, Keenan, has a sick obsession of finding his one true queen -- leaving a trail of angry-chicks-turned-faerie behind. Not a good sign for Aislinn, I tell you. And once she became a candidate, it was either that or death. It could have been an easy decision (well, not really) to stay by a hot faerie prince forever, except that Aislinn is in love with a mortal, Seth. And a murderous-winter-queen-soon-to-be-mother-in-law hot on her heels didn't help at all.

Having said all that, I FREAKING LOVED this book. I was lost in the world of faeries: deceit, beauty, danger and immortality. And since this is the first ever fairie novel that I've come across, I was a little scared at the beginning. Not what I was expecting at all, but I must admit, I was pleasantly surprised.

Although I loved the book and had read the entire series, I wouldn't recommend it to everybody. It's either you will love or hate this book. But one thing that I can assure you is that Melissa Marr's writing is smooth and elegant, dark and haunting. It would leave you breathless inside the world of faeries.

    1. Hi Steph! I loved the rest of the series, especially Radiant Shadows. And I agree about the characters, they are a bit complicated, sometimes I have to go back for reference. I'm glad you also loved this series!
