Review: Hollowland (The Hollows, #1)

I was seriously pissed off with Amazon last week. So here's the story, I discovered this wonderful free ereader on my Android called Kindle. I know, I know, I'd been living under a rock but whatever. So I went to the store, discovered a lot of free ebooks and squealed calmly hit download.

I went ballistic, I tell you! You know how many items I got on my laptop and Android? NINETYFREAKINGTWO (the capslock is necessary)!!!!!! (and so are the exclamation points)

Who does that?! 92 free ebooks?

Anyway, I was happy as a bat! Full of positive thoughts, I felt all fluffy and squishy inside. "What book to start?", I wondered. Then I spotted Anathema by K.A. Tucker. "Oohhh, vampires," I said dreamily. It didn't turn out very good. So next, I read Betrayal by Mayandree Mitchel and instant cover lust! Well, I HATED it! Betrayal put all the capital letters in the word HORRIBLE.

I was about to give up, but all those unread books looked so sad. Plus, I felt guilty for greedily downloading them. So with a resigned sigh, I started to read Hollowland by Amanda Hocking....

ABOUT THE BOOK:
Author: Amanda Hocking

"This is the way the world ends - not with a bang or a whimper, but with zombies breaking down the back door."

Nineteen-year-old Remy King is on a mission to get across the wasteland left of America, and nothing will stand in her way - not violent marauders, a spoiled rock star, or an army of flesh-eating zombies.

BOOK REVIEW:

Amanda Hocking is a very talented writer but she needs a lot of help with editing.

There are sentences in the book that just didn't feel right. Or didn't fit in. Most of the times, I had have to go back to a certain paragraph and I did not enjoy doing that.

Example: The night drug on painfully slow.

I also didn't like how the heroine needs to rescue her brother. I already saw this trend on The Iron King and Blood Red Road. Can we have some variety? Huh?

Now, on to the good stuff!

I really, really loved this book. Wait, don't roll your eyes just yet. I know what you're thinking, "Not another zombie book." Shut it, ok? My unhealthy obsession with zombies is totally abnormal.

Hollowland is an epic WIN. In case of an apocalypse, please consult this book.

Remy is a VERY resourceful girl. Guns, dead batteries, soup ladels, trees, barehands... she'll use anything to kill a zombie. ANYTHING, even zombie body parts. If I ran into a pack of flesh eaters, I would stick to this girl like chewing gum on hair. Guaranteed survival, folks! Hello?! She freakin' kicked a zombie's gelatinous brain.

But please, for the love of all undead beings, don't give this girl any matches or lighters. Just. Don't.

If you have a weak stomach, I'm telling you now, read at your own risk! It rained guts, brains and blood in this novel. Just the way I liked it -- while eating my homemade-in-a-can-sausage-mushroom-soup of course. Yum!

The zombies themselves were an interesting bunch. They worked together to... umm, survive? Basically, when they're not eating brains, they're using them. Who knew zombies can organized an ambush attack? It scared the hell out of me. What happened to my mindless, brain-eating monsters?

Let me get you a plate.

Believe it or not, zombies were not the only enemies that Remy and her friends faced. You know we're fucked up when humans turned against each other in a post-apocalyptic world. Cults, Marauders... who said we can't have it all?

I had a problem with Ripley, the Lioness. You see, I have this weird aversion to cats. So when lion and tigers started to appear in the story, I cringed a little. Yeah, I mean it's cool (totally not). But why couldn't it be a coyote? Or an ELEPHANT? Or a rampaging elephant? Why?! That just didn't sit well with me.

Good thing we have Lazlo, Remy's love interest. He's a little stupid. But no matter, he was a rock star and super sweet. He genuinely cared for Remy after she saved his life so many times. I really liked him. And kinda *coughs* swooned *coughs* a little. Oh, my little heart!

I didn't care much for the supporting characters. They were mildly interesting and really annoying. But that's kind of the point, I guess.

All in all, Hollowland did not disappoint me. I expected brains and guts, I got brains and guts... and other things.

RATING:

Get this novel while it's FREE! Git it! Git it!

  2. I loved this book as well! I'm a huge Hocking fan and this was one of my favorites. I haven't read the second book but a friend told me its still good, but a little too sad. I'm excited to see what you think of that one! You should also check out Virtue by Amanda Hocking. It's short, sweet and fun. Beware of the spelling/grammatical errors again. I have a link to my review for it below!

    1. I'm not sure if I'll read the next one on the series. I heard that the character I really love to hate died... so yeah. Anyway, thanks for suggesting Virtue! I'll check it out. :)

    1. Hi Devlin! I don't think I'll be reading the sequel. I have this perfect little ending in my mind, and I don't want to ruin that. :)

  4. I got the free download for this one awhile ago too (if there's anything wrong with downloading 92 free ebooks, then we can go to the support group together because, come on, it's free! :D ). But anywho.. So I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed it! Brains and gore? Sounds like my kind of party. Too bad about the editing though, seems to be a problem with free/self-pub books. Well, thanks for the review!
