Review: Juliet Immortal

Stacey Jay has always been my guilty pleasure. I just loved her Megan Berry series! So when I picked up Juliet Immortal, I secretly hoped that zombies were involved. And please don't question my morbid fascination with flesh-eating corpses. I just think they're fun to read, ok?

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Author: Stacey Jay

Juliet Capulet didn't take her own life. She was murdered by the person she trusted most, her new husband, Romeo Montague, a sacrifice made to ensure his own immortality. But what Romeo didn't anticipate was that Juliet would be granted eternity, as well, and would become an agent for the Ambassadors of Light.

For 700 years, she's fought Romeo for the souls of true lovers, struggling to preserve romantic love and the lives of the innocent. Until the day she meets someone she's forbidden to love, and Romeo, oh Romeo, will do everything in his power to destroy that love.

BOOK REVIEW:

I was conflicted on whether to love or hate (or really hate) this book. But I made up my mind so I'm writing this review.

"The greatest love story ever told is a lie."

As you might have guessed, this is Romeo's and Juliet's story, told in a completely new perspective that is twisted and messed up. Ironically, the story revolves around the concept of soulmates.

Stories that include soulmates make me want to run and hide. I know from experience that they really suck. But for some reason I just continued reading -- maybe I'll get rewarded for my hard work and experienced some zombie-chasing action. Funnily, I got to see them. Hurray! Well, not really, but close.

Specters (a.k.a. lame corpses that reflect your soul) haunted Romeo and Juliet, forcing them to team up despite their hideous past. I think that was a good twist in the story. Sadly, that's the only good thing that I can say about it. But don't let that discourage you, maybe you'll like it... or not. I mean, it is not the stay-the-eff-away kind of book really.

The characters were okay - nothing really special about their personalities. I find Romeo's little corner of thoughts interesting to read. Juliet's indecisiveness and trust issues (I don't blame her though) a bit infuriating. The author didn't pull off the soulmate-romance smoothly and I was a little dissatisfied.

And the ending? It was unconvincing and left me scratching my head. It flew by so fast I had no idea what hit me! Thinking that it was a standalone book at first, I wanted to yell  INJUSTICE!

RATING:

Luckily (or unluckily?), there is a sequel, Romeo Redeemed. Well, I'm not really excited on reading that. My hopes were completely crushed by Juliet Immortal alone.

  4. I was in two minds about this book as well , as it was an odd read. Though it did get better near the ending and am looking forward to reading my ARC of Romeo Redeemed.
